“The music is simply wonderful—all types, from modern to traditional, to spirituals to classical––all really well done. It always gives my spirit a lift whether I laugh or cry through the music.”
“I felt so welcome from the first day. I love the teachings, the meditations, the music––they have voices of angels. It’s a sensual experience.”
“I keep coming back to the Community for the music and the laughter, and because it is, it seems to me, a place where authenticity is valued more than piety. I always leave refreshed and gently inspired to be––not like, or better than, somebody else, but––a better me.”
“The music is so professionally done and adds so much to the gathering. The Native American Flute during meditations is perfection.”

The Arts MUSIC AT THE COMMUNITY
Great music has been at the heart of my spiritual life since I was a child. Of course as a young professional singer, I was often more concerned with obtaining gainful employment than the spiritual depth of my musical experience. While performing on Broadway, I also sang with some of the great church and temple choirs in New York. I love the sacred music repertoire and my desire to share this music with others has been part of my life from as far back as I can remember. Nothing moves me, opens my heart, reveals my Buddha nature, my Christ-like essence as does great music. It is as if music is the voice of the universe. From the first embryonic thoughts that led to the birth of the Community of Peace and Spirituality, it was evident that music would be an integral part of its being. It could be no other way. Eugene Wisoff joined the Community as Music Director in 2004, bringing his vast experience to the program. The Community is blessed to have L. Joyce Hitchcock as Associate Director of Music. Joyce’s talents as an accompanist, composer, and singer combined with her depth of spiritual practice and open-hearted commitment to service make her an invaluable gift to the Community. We are deeply grateful to have Gene and Joyce leading our music program. Gatherings at the Community include original and traditional music sung by everyone, as well as great ensemble pieces sung by the chorale and soloists. The Music Team offers an eclectic repertoire ranging from gems of the Renaissance through to the contemporary masterpieces of the twentieth and twenty-first century. Gospel and the best of Broadway might be heard at the Community on any given Sunday. Everyone attending will have the opportunity to join in songs, chants, and just plain old rabble-rousing, soul-stirring, joyful tunes of celebration. Informal auditions for volunteer choir positions are held regularly throughout the year. Just speak with Gene after any gathering. Some sight reading ability is helpful but a desire to share the joy of music is essential. |
